Midigama is a jewel on Sri Lanka’s south coast and it is famous for the consistent waves and many surf breaks. At Kima Surf Camps we always use the knowledge of our local surf guides to pick the best surf spot every day. We always monitor the conditions, the swell, tide, wind and overall weather so you we fing the best time to surf Midigama.
If you join our camp you can sign up for two sessions a day. A morning session and an afternoon session. In between you will have plenty of time to chill, eat, connect and get ready for your next surf. If you want to have a relaxing surf at Lazy Right or a more challenging wave at Rams, we’ll get you there safe and sound. You only have to focus on making the most out of your surf!
HAZARDS TO BE AWARE OF:
ENTRY
Accessing the surf at spots like Rams and Sticks often involves paddling over coral reef sections or walking across rocky beaches, which can be slippery or sharp. Lazy Right is more gentle and generally offers easier and safer entry, but always stay cautious of rocks or coral near the shoreline.
TIDE
The tides in Sri Lanka don’t change much so you can find a wave at almost anytime of the day. At spots like Sticks, Rams and Plantations which are reef breaks just be aware of exposed reef during low tide.
SAFETY
Be aware of the reef when the tide is getting lower and also be aware of the rip currents during bigger swell. Our surf guides always put your safety first and explain the hazards. So you can enjoy your surf sessions and improve.
WHAT IS THE BEACH LIKE?
The beaches in Midigama are beautiful and laid-back with golden sand and clear, warm waters. The beaches are wide and uncrowded, offering plenty of space to unwind or paddle out to catch a wave. Surrounded by lush greenery and coconut palms, Midigama’s beaches give you a true taste of Sri Lanka’s natural beauty. LAZY RIGHT SURF BREAKS
Lazy Right is the best intermediate surf spot in Midigama and one of the most approachable waves on Sri Lanka’s south coast. Great for surfers who are looking to perfect their pop ups and turns on long and forgiving waves. It’s a deep reef break and it holds up big swell. The mellow, peeling waves makes it perfect for progressing towards the more challenging breaks around. Intermediates and longboarders can enjoy the long rides and fun waves. It’s also often used as a warm-up spot for more challenging breaks nearby.

RAMS SURF BREAK
Rams is the surf spot where you will score barrels and advanced waves. It is Midigama’s most advanced wave and should be respected. Rams has both a fast right-hander and a punchy left that can pump out rides up to 100m, the wave breaks over shallow reef and rock, so take caution. Advanced surfers (5 Star +) will love this surf spot for its super quick takeoffs and tubes.

PLANTATIONS SURF BREAK
Plantations is ideal Level 3–4 star surfers with its fun right hander and occasional left. Plantations starts breaking after 2 feet and holds some nice size, and typically works at all tides. This spot is often not crowded so enjoy a nice peaceful morning session here.

STICKS SURF BREAK
Sticks is an A frame wave that got its name from the iconic stilt-fishermen that cast their lines close to shore. This reef break has many different peaks for the surfers which helps to disperse the crowds you will often find here. The peaks are shifty and can be tricky to find your take off at times. A solid spot for short and fun boards, on bigger days 4+ star surfers can find peeling waves up to 350m.

DEVIL ROCK SURF SPOT
Devil Rock also known as “Sion” in some lineups, Devil’s Island is the last ride in Ahangama before crossing the bridge to Midigama. It is an A-frame reef break with very consistent waves in high season. This spot can hold swells of up to 5-6 feet with fun rides up to 50m both left and right. Great waves for more intermediate surfers to practice different skills and techniques. The best time to surf this spot is mid-tide when it’s not too shallow. The waves here are one of the steeper and more challenging waves in the area.

The best surf season in Midigama runs from November to April, this is the dry season along Sri Lanka’s Southwest Coast.This is when you can find clear and consistent conditions with offshore winds in the early mornings.
Lazy right is a gentle reef break surf spot that produces long mellow right hand rides, with a forgiving take off and peeling waves perfect for intermediate surfers looking to progress their skills and take on more challenging surf spots.
It is not a necessity to have reef boots but it is recommended, although the reef is flat and not sharp there are still sea urchins and coral patches which the reef boots can protect you from.
