Surf the best spots in Weligama with Kima Surf

Weligama is located on the South Coast of Sri Lanka and is one of the island’s best destinations to surf. The peak season in this area is from November to April, but there is opportunity to surf all year round, especially for beginners. This spot is ideal for beginner surfers to learn how to surf since the waves are mellow and long. Intermediates can also improve their skills and advance on bigger swell days. For more advanced surfers there is also an opportunity to explore the reef breaks which offer more challenging rides.

All of the breaks are a short ride away from our Kima Surf Weligama Camp. Weligama has a laidback atmosphere with a social vibe and great surf. Staying with Kima Surf gives you the chance to experience the best spots Weligama has to offer with our daily guided sessions with experienced surf instructors.

HAZARDS  TO BE AWARE OF:

Weligama main beach is a beach break and this makes entry in the water very straightforward. Your surf instructors will direct you to use the open channels to paddle out easily. In the nearby reef breaks it is important to be cautious of the reef when entering and exiting the surf. Before entering the water be sure to listen carefully to your surf guide’s explanation of the spot.

Sri Lanka has very small changes in the tide so it is usually possible to surf at any time of the day. The reef breaks work the best in mid to high tide which creates the best conditions for long rides left and right.

At the beach breaks you do not need to worry about the reef but it is important to be aware of the shore break that breaks powerfully onto the beach during big swells. When surfing at one of the reef breaks it is important to be cautious of the reef.

WHAT IS  THE BEACH LIKE?

Weligama Beach is a beach break that stretches on for about 2 kilometers along the Weligama bay. Weligama’s mellow waves make Weligama one of the best spots for beginner surfers in the area. If you drive further up the coast you will find some more advanced reef breaks, like Fisherman’s or Mirissa. Fishermen’s boats are dotted along the coast and you can spend your downtime chilling at many cafes and local restaurants along the beach after your surf.
