10 Myths About Surfing
Common Misconceptions and the Truth
We know that surfing is an amazing sport that many people dream of trying. However, there are some myths out there that sometimes hold people back from getting on a surfboard. If you’re thinking about your first lesson or you’re already surfing the waves, it’s time to clear up some common misconceptions. Let’s take a look at 10 myths about surfing and get to the truth!
“Surfing is only for young people”
You would think that surfing is just for the young crowd, but believe us, it doesn’t! Sure, many surfers start young, but the truth is that surfing is for everyone. There are people who enjoy surfing from all different age groups. Most surfers learn about this sport later in life and are quickly drawn to the ocean and become hooked on surfing. It’s not about your age, it’s about the experience and the fun of being out on the water.
In fact, some of the most inspiring stories come from older surfers who prove that age is just a number. Take Seichi Sano, for example. He started surfing at 80 years old and he still rides the waves at 89 years! His story shows that age is just a number.
So whether you’re 30, 40, 50, 60 or even 80, you’re never too old to catch your first wave!
“You need to be in great shape to start surfing”
You might think you need to be super fit and lean to hit the waves, but that’s not the case! Surf Schools and camps are designed for people of all fitness levels and for all looks. Yes it helps if you already have some sort of strength and condition, but you don’t have to be an athlete. Just bring your enthusiasm! Plus, you’ll build more strength and condition as you practice surfing, so it becomes easier over time. So, don’t your fitness level hold you back, jump on that board and give it a go!
“Surfing is an expensive sport”
Yes, surfing does come with a price tag sometimes, but it doesn’t have to. Most surf schools offer good prices for lessons and surf gear rental. Making it an accessible sport for beginners and people who don’t like to spend a lot of money. And once you have spent the money for the basic gear, like the right surfboard, leash and a swimsuit, you can enjoy the sport without much more costs. And, for most surf spots you don’t have to pay so you’re free to paddle out there and catch waves without thinking about your wallet!
“You have to be the best swimmer to surf”
While being an accomplished swimmer definitely helps, you don’t have to be as good a swimmer as Micheal Phellps in order to start your surfing experience. Many beginners take lessons even if they’re not the best swimmers and most lessons are held in shallow water. A little bit of basic swimming skill and knowledge of how things work near the ocean will help keep you safe. At Kima Surf, our surf guides always guide you to make sure you are safe during the learning process of surfing.

“You don’t need a warming up before surfing”
Do you think you can just paddle out there and start surfing? Not so fast! Warming up is an important part of surfing that you should never miss. As with any other physical activity or sport, your body needs to be ready for the movements while surfing. A good warming up increases the blood flow to your muscles, increases flexibility and prevents common surf injuries.
A good preparation is to practice your pop-up on dry land before jumping into the water. This will make you more confident and it will be much easier once you’re in the water. So, don’t skip the warming up!
“Surfer are all daredevils”
Not every surfer is chasing those huge, gnarly waves! For many people, it’s just a fun and relaxing hobby. Of course, some surfers love the adrenaline rush and pushing themselves, but many people get in the water just to enjoy peace, the sun and time with friends.

“You’ll easily get injured while surfing”
Probably one of the biggest myths about surfing is that it’s a dangerous activity with lots of injuries waiting to happen. Sure there are risks, as with any other sport or physical activity, but most common surf injuries can be prevented with a bit of common sense, knowledge about surf etiquettes and that warming up we discussed.
The most important thing is knowing your own limitations and what’s going on around you. If you’re just starting to surf, stick to smaller waves and then slowly work your way up. Lessons from surf guides can make a huge difference, they’ll teach you about everything you will ever need to know. Everything from the basics, the surf etiquette and how to keep yourself safe in the water.
And don’t forget to take care of your body and mind too! Exercise, stretching and warming up help to avoid injuries. Of course, accidents can happen, but with a focus on safety, surf etiquettes and respect for the ocean, you can enjoy all the surfing with no stress. So don’t worry, get out there and have fun!
“Surfing is an individual sport”

Many people think that surfing is a solo sport, but the reality is that it’s a very social sport! The minute you are out in the water, you’re part of a community of surfers who share the same passion. Surfers look out for each other, share tips and celebrate each other’s successes. All while they are all together in the ocean, waiting for the next wave!
Also, don’t overlook the surf etiquettes! Respecting other surfers in the lineup and knowing the unwritten rules of surfing play a part in a good vibes and friendship with others.
“Surfing is just for summer”
You may not realize this, but you can actually surf all year round! Depending on where you want to surf, every climate and season will provide different conditions and experiences on the waves. In tropical places like Bali and Sri Lanka, the rainy season sometimes creates great swells that a lot of surfers are looking for. Since the change of the sea winds, it can generate strong and intense swells. Especially on the east coast. The island is also less crowded with tourists and surfers, and the places are more green and lively.
And if you’re thinking about surfing in colder countries, don’t worry! Just grab a wetsuit to keep your body warm. In fact, winter swells can be some of the best surfing days you’ll have because of the large, consistent waves.
So, don’t limit yourself to summer, experience the fun of riding waves in any season, all year round.
“You have to live close to the ocean to surf”
Many people think that surfing isn’t possible if you aren’t by the sea, but that’s just not the case. It’s great to have the ocean on your doorstep, but there is a world of surf schools, camps, and holidays out there that can get your surf on, wherever you are.
Surfers are generally happier than not to travel in search of surf locations and there are amazing surf destinations all over the world just waiting to be explored.
