Ways to help Sri Lanka's environment

Let’s explore ways that we can protect Sri Lanka’s environment  and travel sustainably:

Sri Lanka is located in the Indian Ocean and is the newest hotspot for perfect surf, cultural diversity, and natural beauty. Besides its beautiful landscapes and delicious food, the island also has environmental problems that need action.

Let's protect Sri Lanka’s environment  together!

In this blog, we’ll explore Sri Lanka’s environmental issues in further detail, look at the historical context, and discuss how you can help find a solution! Join us as we ride the waves of change and work to support Sri Lanka, the paradise.

Sri Lanka’s  environmental challenges

To understand the present, we must understand the past. Sri Lanka is known for its greenery and its ecosystems, but it also has seen many environmental changes over the years. Just like everywhere else, there’s always something you need to know before coming to Sri Lanka. Famous landscapes like Yala National Park, Udawalawe National Park, and Sinharaja Forest are what shape the island’s unique ecosystems and its hidden gems. Over time, deforestation, industrialization and urbanization, along with tourism, have broken this balance.

The developing nation of Sri Lanka is now facing even more environmental challenges due to climate change. Deforestation from farming and urbanization is destroying habitats for its plants and animals, while water pollution is harming marine life. We must take action to protect Sri Lanka’s environment.

How to Deal With  Climate Change

Sri Lanka acknowledges the consequences of climate change and takes action to reduce these problems. The recently enforced National Climate Change Policy and the Climate Act demonstrate a commitment to a more eco-friendly future. The government has also worked towards educating and empowering its youth to reduce climate threats together for a future that is ecologically sustainable.

Sri Lanka is taking action through developing organic farming methods and eco-friendly tourism initiatives. These initiatives not only protect the environment but also promote a better future for Sri Lanka.

Here's  how you can help!

We have a significant impact on the future of wildlife and the environment as tourists. Simple things such as using less plastic, being aware of water use, and becoming involved in the community can make a big impact. As you get ready for your surf, think about applying sustainable sunscreens. Even when you’re out  doing other things that aren’t  surfing, you should still incorporate eco-friendly activities into your everyday routine and take quick showers. In order to protect Sri Lanka’s environment every effort matters.

Be a green tourist  by following these five suggestions!

  1. Reduce, Reuse & Recycle: When taking in Sri Lanka’s stunning natural surroundings, make an effort to use reusable goods like shopping bags and environmentally friendly water bottles.
  2. Conserve Energy: When you are not using or surfing, unplug electronics, turn off lights, and turn off the air conditioner!
  3. Conserve Water: Reduce the length of your showers and shut off the water while you brush your teeth.
  4. Green Transportation: Use public transportation, walk, bike, or carpool to tour the island.
  5. Try Local Favorites: Make an effort to consume as many organic, locally grown, and in-season foods as possible. There are many tasty and nutritious traditional cuisines available in Sri Lanka. Aim to consume less meat and experiment with plant-based diets.

The water and its beaches serve as our surfing playground. Because we feel a sense of responsibility for the environment, we at Kima are committed to doing our part to conserve it. We’re committed to reducing our environmental impact, even beyond the waves. In  Weligama and Hiriketiya, we switched out single-use plastics for more sustainable ones. We don’t use plastic straws and are always searching for new ways to be more environmentally friendly. In addition to protecting Sri Lanka’s environment , our monthly beach clean-ups give individuals an opportunity to get to know one another and the natural world.

Whether you are currently planning a trip to Sri Lanka or already here, you may be wondering how you can contribute. Here’s how!

Let’s make a commitment to keeping our surroundings clean so they remain beautiful and flourishing. If we accomplish this, we will be able to ride the waves around this lovely island for many years to come!
