GETTING THERE

To get to Sri Lanka, it’s worth comparing different airlines and routes through platforms such as Skyscanner, Google Flights or Traveloka. Depending on where you’re travelling from, you may need to connect through a major international hub before continuing to Sri Lanka.

For Kima Surf Hiriketiya, you should fly into Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), located just north of Colombo. Hiriketiya is just over 200 km from the airport, and the journey by car takes approximately 2.5 to 3.5 hours, depending on traffic and your chosen route.

Yes, you can bring your own surfboard to Sri Lanka. Airline surfboard policies and fees vary, so please check directly with your airline before travelling and make sure your board bag meets their size and weight requirements.

If you decide not to bring your own board, we have surfboards available to rent, from soft tops to performance boards.

Yes, we can arrange a private airport transfer directly from Bandaranaike International Airport to Kima Surf Hiriketiya. Your driver will meet you in the arrivals hall, help with your luggage and take you directly to camp in a comfortable, air-conditioned car.

The transfer takes approximately 2.5–3.5 hours. Airport transfers are an optional add-on and are not included in your Kima package. The current price for a Kima Hiriketiya airport transfer is €175 per person, per way.

Please provide your flight details in advance so we can arrange your transfer. If you are already in Sri Lanka or arriving from somewhere other than the airport, contact our team and we’ll help you arrange the best option.

VISAS FOR SRI LANKA

Most nationalities need an ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation) to enter Sri Lanka, including for stays of less than 30 days. The ETA can be arranged online before travelling.

As of 25 May 2026, nationals of 40 countries, including the UK, US, Australia, Canada and most European countries, can obtain a 30-day tourist ETA free of charge. Other nationalities may need to pay the standard processing fee.

Before travelling, check the latest requirements through the official Sri Lankan government visa portal.

When arriving in Sri Lanka, make sure you have:

  • A passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date
  • A return or onward ticket
  • Proof of accommodation — your Kima booking confirmation is sufficient

FINANCES

The local currency in Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR).

You can exchange foreign currency at banks, authorised money changers and at the airport.

ATMs are also available around the south coast. We recommend carrying some Sri Lankan Rupees with you, particularly for smaller local restaurants, shops and businesses. Once you arrive at Kima Surf Hiriketiya, our front office team will be more than happy to point you towards the closest money changers and ATMs.

SURF CAMP

Kima Surf Hiriketiya is nestled in the lush Sri Lankan jungle, close to the famous Hiriketiya Bay. The camp is around 10 minutes by Tuk Tuk from Hiriketiya Beach, where you’ll spend most of your time surfing.

Our surf guiding sessions use Tuk Tuks to take you to the best surf spots depending on the conditions and your level.

Please keep your valuables safely stored during your stay and avoid leaving cash, passports, electronics or other important belongings unattended. Kima Surf cannot be held responsible for lost or stolen items.

Sri Lanka uses Type D, M and G plugs. The standard voltage is 230V and the frequency is 50Hz. If your devices use a different plug type, we recommend bringing a suitable travel adapter with you.

Hiriketiya is surrounded by lush tropical greenery, so mosquitoes can be present, particularly in the morning and evening. We recommend bringing mosquito repellent and light clothing that covers your arms and legs when needed.

Our Kima Sri Lanka surf camps provide towels. These should not be taken to the beach, so please pack your favourite beach towel.

Yes, bed linen is provided in all accommodation. Rooms are equipped for a comfortable tropical stay, with air conditioning available in the accommodation.

Yes. Free Wi-Fi is available at Kima Surf Hiriketiya, so you can stay connected during your trip and get some work done in our 24/7 coworking space.

TRANSPORT & GETTING AROUND

Yes, you can rent a scooter or motorbike while travelling around Sri Lanka. However, you must have an International Driving Permit. A standard European or Australian driving licence alone is not sufficient. We recommend arranging your international licence before leaving home.

If you prefer not to drive, Tuk Tuks are an easy and affordable way to get around and can be arranged through the camp.

Kima Surf Hiriketiya uses Tuk Tuks for surf transfers and trips to different surf spots along the south coast. Surf transfers for your guided sessions are included in your Kima package.

For independent trips, our team can help arrange additional Tuk Tuk transport or a private driver.

SURFING & WEATHER

Kima Surf Hiriketiya has a range of surfboards suitable for different levels and conditions.

If you’re joining our 5-Day Learn to Surf Course, your package includes a soft-top surfboard, Lycra, wax and leash.

If you’ve surfed before, our surf guides can help you choose the right board from our Premium Surfboard Collection, which includes surfboards from top brands such as AIPA, Gerry Lopez and WOO Surfboard Shapes.

No full wetsuit needed! The water is warm all year round, so your favourite surf suit, bikini or board shorts are all you need. A Lycra or rash vest is also useful for sun protection while surfing.

Surf lessons are structured coaching sessions designed to teach you the fundamentals of surfing. They are particularly recommended for complete beginners.

Surf guiding is different. Kima’s professional surf guides take you to suitable surf spots, explain the conditions and provide support in the water while you surf. Sessions are selected according to your ability, the tide, swell and wind conditions.

Kima Surf Hiriketiya offers two guided surf sessions per day, seven days a week, with groups organised according to ability.

If you’re completely new to surfing, we recommend our 5-Day Learn to Surf Course. It gives you a solid foundation and helps you build confidence in the water.

If you already know how to pop up and can surf independently, our 1–6 Star Sessions are a great way to keep improving your surfing.

No. Everything you need for the 5-Day Learn to Surf Course is provided, including a soft-top surfboard, Lycra, wax and leash.

Absolutely. Hiriketiya is a sheltered, horseshoe-shaped bay with waves for different levels.

The west side of the bay has a sandy bottom and softer waves that are ideal for beginners. The middle of the bay has deeper reef peaks, while the east side offers a faster left-hander for intermediate and advanced surfers.

If conditions at Hiriketiya aren’t suitable, our experienced guides can take you to other surf spots in the area.

Sri Lanka has surfable waves throughout the year, with the south coast generally offering its best surf conditions from October to April.

From December to February, Hiriketiya sees smaller waves that are perfect for learning to surf. Between August and December, the waves can be stronger, offering exciting conditions for intermediate surfers, while beginners can still enjoy the calmer beach break.

Sri Lanka has two main seasons, with the south coast generally offering its best surf conditions from October to April. During this period, the south coast experiences less rain and wind, while the Yala season from May to September tends to bring less consistent surf.

The quieter conditions can still make this a great time to enjoy a more relaxed surf trip.

Hiriketiya is warm and tropical throughout the year. Daytime temperatures are generally around the high 20s to low 30s °C, while evenings are usually warm and comfortable.

LIFESTYLE

Enjoy a 3-course breakfast every day, with fresh local and international dishes, plus free-flow coffee and tea. From Monday to Friday, dinner is included, with themed nights featuring burgers, Indian, Indonesian and Sri Lankan dishes, plus a camp-wide BBQ every Friday.

Hiriketiya has a relaxed, social beach-town atmosphere rather than the big nightlife scene you’ll find in Bali. You’ll find beach bars, restaurants and casual places to have a drink, listen to music and meet other travellers. The atmosphere is generally laid-back and centred around the beach and surf community.

Keep it light and simple. Swimwear, board shorts, T-shirts, tank tops, shorts and flip-flops are perfect for most days.

A light long-sleeved shirt and trousers are useful for evenings and for protection from mosquitoes. We also recommend bringing something modest to wear when visiting temples or more traditional local areas.

Don’t forget plenty of sun protection!

ILLNESS, VACCINATION & INSURANCE

No vaccinations are legally required to enter Sri Lanka, except for a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you have recently travelled to or transited through a yellow-fever-affected country.

Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid and Tetanus are among the vaccinations commonly advised for travellers. We recommend speaking to your doctor or travel clinic before your trip for advice based on your individual circumstances.

Hiriketiya has local pharmacies and medical facilities nearby, while larger towns and hospitals provide more comprehensive medical services. For anything serious, we recommend seeking professional medical care rather than relying on medication brought from home.

We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that specifically covers surfing.

Your policy should cover surfing as an activity, medical expenses and emergency evacuation. If you plan to rent a scooter or motorbike, also check that road accidents are covered.
