GETTING THERE

To get to Sri Lanka, it’s worth comparing different airlines and routes through platforms such as Skyscanner, Google Flights or Traveloka. Depending on where you’re travelling from, you may need to connect through a major international hub before continuing to Sri Lanka.

For Kima Surf Weligama, you should fly into Bandaranaike International Airport (CMB), located just north of Colombo. Weligama is around 175 km from the airport, and the journey by car takes approximately 2.5 to 3 hours, depending on traffic and your chosen route.

Yes, you can bring your own surfboard to Sri Lanka. Airline surfboard policies and fees vary, so please check directly with your airline before travelling and make sure your board bag meets their size and weight requirements.

If you decide not to bring your own board, we have surfboards available to rent, from soft tops to performance boards.

Yes, we can arrange a private airport transfer directly from Bandaranaike International Airport to Kima Surf Weligama. Your driver will meet you in the arrivals hall, help with your luggage and take you directly to camp in a comfortable, air-conditioned car.
The transfer takes approximately 2.5–3 hours. Airport transfers are an optional add-on and are not included in your Kima package. The current price for a Kima Weligama airport transfer is €109 per person, per way.
Please provide your flight details in advance so we can arrange your transfer. If you are already in Sri Lanka or arriving from somewhere other than the airport, contact our team and we’ll help you arrange the best option.

VISAS FOR SRI LANKA

As of 25 May 2026, nationals of 40 countries, including the UK, US, Australia, Canada and most European countries, can obtain a 30-day tourist ETA free of charge. Other nationalities may need to pay the standard processing fee.
Before travelling, check the latest requirements through the official Sri Lankan government visa portal.
When arriving in Sri Lanka, make sure you have:
A passport valid for at least 6 months beyond your entry date
A return or onward ticket
Proof of accommodation — your Kima booking confirmation is sufficient

FINANCES

The local currency in Sri Lanka is the Sri Lankan Rupee (LKR).

You can exchange foreign currency at banks, authorised money changers and at the airport.
ATMs are also available around Weligama and the south coast. We recommend carrying some Sri Lankan Rupees with you, particularly for smaller local restaurants, shops and businesses. Once you arrive at Kima Surf Weligama, our front office team will be more than happy to point you towards the closest money changers and ATMs.

SURF CAMP

Kima Surf Weligama is located just a few steps from the beach and the waves of Weligama Bay. The surrounding beach breaks are ideal for beginners and intermediate surfers, while a short Tuk Tuk ride takes you to a range of reef and semi-reef breaks for more advanced surfers.

Please keep your valuables safely stored during your stay and avoid leaving cash, passports, electronics or other important belongings unattended. Kima Surf cannot be held responsible for lost or stolen items.

Sri Lanka uses Type D, M and G plugs. The standard voltage is 230V and the frequency is 50Hz. If your devices use a different plug type, we recommend bringing a suitable travel adapter with you.

Weligama is surrounded by tropical greenery, so mosquitoes can be present, particularly in the morning and evening. We recommend bringing mosquito repellent and light clothing that covers your arms and legs when needed.

Our Kima Sri Lanka surf camps provide towels. These should not be taken to the beach, so please pack your favourite beach towel.

Yes, bed linen is provided in all accommodations. All rooms have air conditioning and hot water for a comfortable stay.

Yes. Free Wi-Fi is available throughout Kima Surf Weligama, with a dedicated co-working area and fibre optic internet connection if you need to get some work done.

TRANSPORT & GETTING AROUND

Yes, you can rent a scooter or motorbike while travelling around Sri Lanka. However, you must have an International Driving Permit. A standard European or Australian driving licence alone is not sufficient. We recommend arranging your international licence before leaving home.
If you prefer not to drive, Tuk Tuks are an easy and affordable way to get around and can be arranged through the camp.

Yes. Kima Surf Weligama uses Tuk Tuks for surf transfers and trips to different surf spots along the south coast. Surf transfers for your guided sessions are included in your Kima package.
For independent trips, our team can help arrange additional Tuk Tuk transport or a private driver.

SURFING & WEATHER

Kima Surf Weligama has a range of surfboards suitable for different levels and conditions.
If you’re joining our 5-Day Learn to Surf Course, your package includes the equipment you need for the course.
If you’ve surfed before, our surf guides can help you choose the right board for your level and the conditions.

No full wetsuit needed! The water is warm all year round, so your favourite surf suit, bikini or board shorts are all you need. A Lycra or rash vest is also useful for sun protection while surfing.

Surf lessons are structured coaching sessions designed to teach you the fundamentals of surfing. They are particularly recommended for complete beginners.
Surf guiding is different. Kima’s professional surf guides take you to suitable surf spots, explain the conditions and provide support in the water while you surf. Sessions are selected according to your ability, the tide, swell and wind conditions.
Kima Surf Weligama offers two guided surf sessions per day, seven days a week, with groups organised according to ability.

If you’re completely new to surfing, we recommend our 5-Day Learn to Surf Course. It gives you a solid foundation and helps you build confidence in the water.
If you already know how to pop up and can surf independently, our guided sessions are a great way to keep improving your surfing.

No. Everything you need for the 5-Day Learn to Surf Course is provided.

Absolutely. Weligama is one of the best places in Sri Lanka to learn to surf, with sandy beach breaks and mellow waves right near the camp. The waves are ideal for beginners, while a short Tuk Tuk ride gives intermediate and advanced surfers access to a wider range of reef and semi-reef breaks.

The best time to surf on Sri Lanka’s south coast is generally from November to April. During this period, Weligama sees lighter winds and mellow, consistent swells that are particularly good for beginners.
You can surf in Sri Lanka year-round, but conditions on the south coast are generally less consistent from May to September.

Weligama is warm and tropical throughout the year. The south coast generally has its best surf conditions from November to April, while May to September can bring less consistent conditions.

LIFESTYLE

Enjoy breakfast every day, with fresh local and international dishes, plus free-flow coffee and tea. From Monday to Friday, dinner is included, with a mix of Sri Lankan and international dishes, plus a camp-wide BBQ every Friday.

Weligama has a relaxed, social beach-town atmosphere with plenty of restaurants, beach bars and places to grab a drink after surfing. It’s easy to meet other travellers and enjoy the laid-back surf community without the big nightlife scene you’ll find in larger destinations.

Keep it light and simple. Swimwear, board shorts, T-shirts, tank tops, shorts and flip-flops are perfect for most days.
A light long-sleeved shirt and trousers are useful for evenings and for protection from mosquitoes. We also recommend bringing something modest to wear when visiting temples or more traditional local areas.
Don’t forget plenty of sun protection!

ILLNESS, VACCINATION & INSURANCE

No vaccinations are legally required to enter Sri Lanka, except for a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you have recently travelled to or transited through a yellow-fever-affected country.
Hepatitis A and B, Typhoid and Tetanus are among the vaccinations commonly advised for travellers. We recommend speaking to your doctor or travel clinic before your trip for advice based on your individual circumstances.

Weligama has local pharmacies and medical facilities nearby, while larger towns and hospitals provide more comprehensive medical services. For anything serious, we recommend seeking professional medical care rather than relying on medication brought from home.

We strongly recommend comprehensive travel insurance that specifically covers surfing.

Your policy should cover surfing as an activity, medical expenses and emergency evacuation. If you plan to rent a scooter or motorbike, also check that road accidents are covered.
