Video analysis  with Kima Surf

Watch yourself,  improve your surf

If you have ever sat and watched a video of yourself surfing, we’re sure that you know the feeling of thinking, “Is that really what I look like when surfing?”

At Kima Surf, VIDEO ANALYSIS is one of our top tools that is used daily to improve your surfing. VIDEO ANALYSIS is one of the best ways to learn from your mistakes and make progress, whether you are a beginner or an advanced surfer. At Kima Surf, we have two VIDEO ANALYSIS sessions per day in our surf camps in Sri Lanka. If you join a video session, you and your group will watch all your videos together with your surf guide. In this session, your surf guide will explain what you did well and what you can improve. You’ll have the opportunity to download your videos afterwards so you can show all your friends and family at home!

Below you’ll find some of the ways that you can use VIDEO ANALYSIS to improve your surfing!

1. See what you can improve

When you are catching a wave it’s quite difficult to be completely aware of your body movements. For beginner surfers, it is hard to think at all about what you are doing since you’re catching your first waves ever! This is where videos can help you see the full picture. Videos can show you:

  • Are your feet in the right position?
  • Is your pop up correct?
  • Are you compressing your knees at the right time?

Seeing your mistakes in front of you allows you to analyse how to correct these mistakes for next time.

2. Progress quickly with feedback

During your VIDEO ANALYSIS sessions with your Kima Surf guide, they’ll break down each of your waves from your surf lesson, step by step, and then slowly explain how to improve. Through these explanations, you will learn:

  1. What you are doing right.
  2. What you are doing wrong.
  3. What you need to do to fix your mistakes.

This feedback from experienced surf guides will speed up your progress with one session of VIDEO ANALYSIS, saving you a lot of time doing trial and error. Sometimes it’s a tiny problem that needs to be fixed, and this can change the game.

3. Building good surfing habits

Creating good habits and techniques is all about repetition. When you can track your waves through videos, it becomes easier to:

  1. Correct bad habits early.
  2. Practice the movements that work.
  3. Build muscle memory.

By doing VIDEO ANALYSIS, you will find the things that work and do not work and then intentionally practice those good things until they become second nature.

4. Boosting your confidence

Seeing how you are improving can be very motivating. There are often surf sessions where we get out of the water feeling very frustrated, feeling like we aren’t making any progress. Luckily, videos will show you all the small ways that you have been improving, giving you the motivation to keep on going!

5. Perfect for all levels

You don’t need to be extremely advanced to benefit from VIDEO ANALYSIS sessions. Beginner surfers are often the ones who benefit the most, because it is mostly just small changes that need to be made. Small changes such as:

  1. Standing up earlier.
  2. Selecting better waves.
  3. Improving timing on the wave.

These are all small, but they make a huge difference in the waves.

6. Watch to learn from others

At Kima Surf, we do VIDEO ANALYSIS with your whole surf group, so that you don’t only learn from your own mistakes but also from other people too. This is the perfect opportunity to learn from others and take tips for your next session!

7. Staying motivated on your surfing journey

You’ll start to collect a library of videos and you’ll be able to look back on how far you’ve come. It’s so easy to get caught up in all the mistakes you’ve been making, but you can use these videos to look back on how much you’ve improved and keep motivated to carry on.
