The 5 Best Beginner Surf Spots  in Weligama

Where to  Catch Your Very First Wave

Your first time surfing can feel a bit like trying to dance on a moving piece of soap while someone throws buckets of salt water in your face. It’s chaotic, it’s sandy, and if you’re in the wrong spot, it can be a little intimidating. But then there is Sri Lanka. Specifically, Weligama.

Weligama translates to “Sandy Village,” and for a beginner surfer, those two words are music to the ears. No sharp rocks, no terrifying urchins, just long stretches of soft sand and beginner-friendly waves. With its warm tropical waters, consistent swells, and beautiful beaches, Weligama has gained a reputation as one of the best destinations to start your surf journey. If you’re staying with us at Kima Surf Sri Lanka, you’re already in the heart of the action, just a stone’s throw away from the best spots. But where exactly are our surf guides taking you for a fun surf? Or where should you and your friends point your board?

Grab a coconut, kick off your flip-flops, and let’s look at the five best spots to catch your first (or sixtieth) wave in and around Weligama.

  • Most Popular (Crowded): Weligama Main Point
  • Best Season to learn how to surf: November – April (South Coast)

When and Where  to Find Beginner Bliss

Before we dive into the different surf spots, let’s talk about timing. You can surf year-round in Sri Lanka, but it works in shifts. Understanding the seasons of the island and the anatomy of a beginner surf spot is key in finding and riding the best waves around.

For the south coast and Weligama, the golden window is between November and April, during the Maha Season. This is when the winds stay light and the Indian Ocean sends mellow swells toward the shore, creating waves that are perfect for beginners.

When you’re looking for a beginner-friendly surf spot, you are essentially looking for three things:

  1. A soft sand bottom, to save your knees and your ego.
  2. Long, gentle white water waves rather than scary hollow ones.
  3. A calm and predictable current, so you won’t drift away from the lineup.

Weligama is the king of this setup. For a deeper dive into our island’s weather patterns, check out our blog about Sri Lanka’s seasons. And if you’re curious about all the characteristics of a beginner-friendly surf spot, check out this blog. Now, let’s get into where you’ll be spending your mornings, surfing and having fun.

#1 Weligama Main Point

Weligama Bay in Sri Lanka

This is the most popular spot for anyone taking surf lessons in Weligama. The bay is massive, which means there is plenty of room for everyone to spread out. But since this spot is so accessible, it also becomes quite busy. So keep the surf etiquette in mind and listen to your guide. The beauty of the Main Point is its consistency of the waves. The bay is protected from the wind and if you’re lucky you can catch a 400m ride on a nice, mellow wave.

Because the bottom is pure, soft sand, you don’t have to worry about where you land when you wipe out. The waves here break far out and roll for a long time, giving you those precious extra seconds to remember everything your Kima surf guide told you about the pop-up  or your turning before the wave reaches the shore. It is, quite simply, the best place for your first time surfing.

#2 Island Point

Right in front of the famous house on an island (Taprobane) in the middle of the bay, there’s a sweet little peak that works perfectly when the tide is right. It’s not always “on,” but when it is, it’s one of the most scenic places to surf.

Riding a wave with that iconic villa in the background is a total “bucket list” moment. It’s a gentle sand-bottom break that’s perfect for practicing your paddling and wave timing. Plus, the view of the stilt fishermen in the distance makes the whole experience feel uniquely Sri Lankan.

#3 Jungle Beach

If you want to feel like you’ve stepped into a scene from a tropical movie, Jungle Beach is your next surf spot. Tucked away just a short ride from our Kima Surf camp, this little cove is shielded from the main hustle and bustle of the town.

The waves here are usually smaller and well-protected from the wind, making it a safe spot if the main bay is looking a bit too choppy. The backdrop of lush greenery and overhanging palms makes for some pretty mental snapshots while you’re sitting on your board waiting for the next set. It’s quiet, it’s beautiful and it reminds you why you chose Sri Lanka in the first place.

Extra Tip: surfing is a workout you don’t realize you’re doing until you try to lift your arms to wash your hair the next morning. Luckily, Sri Lanka’s kitchen has the perfect post-surf dishes you should try. Rice and curry for example, is the ultimate recovery fuel!

#4 Mirissa Beach

Just a ten-minute drive from Weligama lies Mirissa, famous for its whale watching and its stunning, crescent-shaped beach. While Mirissa has a reputation for being a bit more for advanced surfers, there is a great right-hander at the western end of the bay that is friendly for those who are just starting out or if you are transitioning to intermediate.

It’s a point break that rolls over a mix of sand and deep reef, offering a slightly faster ride than the main beach. It’s a great spot to test your limits once you’ve learned the basics of surfing at the Main Point in Weligama. After your session, you’re in the perfect spot for a beachfront smoothie bowl, which, let’s be honest, is part of the reason we go on that surf trip!

#5 Lazy Right

If the name didn’t give it away, this spot is all about the “mellow” life. Located in the nearby village of Midigama, Lazy Right is possibly the most approachable reef break on the South Coast. It’s a fat, predictable and slow-rolling wave over a very deep reef. It’s perfect for laid-back longboarders and beginners who are ready to level up their skills.

What makes it a great confidence-builder for a beginner surfer is its gentle drop of the wave. You get plenty of time on the wave to practice your turns and adjustments. You can find its sibling, Lazy Left, just a short paddle away. That spot is more for intermediate surfers, with faster-breaking waves and steeper drops. As a beginner, it’s best to stick to the Right and use the view of the Left to watch and learn from the more experienced surfers.

Keep an eye on the iconic fishing stilts rising from the water. They serve as a perfect marker for when to kick out of the wave. Also, be careful; while it’s a friendly ride, the impact zone can get a bit heavy on bigger days, so it’s always best to head out with your Kima Surf Sri Lanka guides who know the rhythm of the reef.
