Beginner vs. Intermediate:  Which Kima Surf Camp in Sri Lanka Is Right for You?

Weligama  or Hiriketiya?

It’s the question we get asked more than almost anything else before a guest books their surf trip to Kima Surf in Sri Lanka: Which camp should I choose?

We already have a guide that helps you decide based on the vibe you’re after, whether that’s social or quiet, lively or laid-back. But this guide answers a different question entirely: Which camp will make you a better surfer based on where you are right now?

Because the wave setup right outside your door matters. Depending on your current level, matching your starting point to the right break is a structured, fully supported way to go from total zero to riding real unbroken waves.

Know Your Level  First

Before picking your base, let’s be completely honest about where your surfing actually sits right now. Leave the ego at home, self-identifying correctly means catching more waves and having ten times more fun.

  • True Beginner: You’ve never surfed, or you’ve had fewer than five sessions. You’re still working on your pop-up, getting comfortable in the ocean, board handling, and positioning. Green waves feel like a long way off.
  • Progressing Beginner: You can reliably stand up and ride whitewash waves to the beach. You’re starting to head out to the lineup to catch small green (unbroken) waves, but you’re still working on timing and turning.
  • Intermediate: You comfortably paddle past the foam, read incoming sets, pop up on green waves, and trim down the line. Now, you are ready to generate more speed, refine top-turn mechanics, wave selection, and reef entry/exit strategy.
  • Advanced: You read lineups effortlessly, generate speed down the line, and execute controlled turns or cutbacks. You’re looking for heavier reef peaks, optimal tide windows, and local guide knowledge to find the best peaks away from the crowd.

A quick note: While this guide focuses primarily on beginners and intermediates, we also coach advanced surfers across all our camps. If you’re hunting powerful, hollow waves, our local surf guides take the advanced crews right into the best swells on the coast.

Kima Weligama:  Built for Beginners (and Great for Intermediates Too)

If you fall into the True or Progressing Beginner bucket, Kima Surf Weligama is the right starting point. Our camp sits right around the corner of Weligama Bay, a 2-kilometre stretch of sandy, sheltered coastline that’s widely considered one of the best places to learn to surf.

The waves here break gently over sand, providing a safe environment where you can make mistakes, practice falling safely and build muscle memory over a soft sand bottom. It’s also where our 5-day Learn-to-Surf program takes place, right at the bay. With small groups and surf guides beside you every step of the way, it’s the fastest way to go from total zero to riding real unbroken waves.

At Kima Weligama, the focus is on building a solid foundation that actually sticks. From surf guiding to video analysis and pool sessions back at camp so you fix bad habits before they start. And when you’re ready to explore beyond the bay, beginner to intermediate step up spots like Fisherman’s and Lazy Left in Midigama are just a short ride away.

So, if you’re choosing your first surf camp in Sri Lanka and haven’t stood up on a green wave yet? Weligama gives you the best possible start.

Kima Hiriketiya:  The Intermediate Playground

For intermediate surfers ready to level up, Kima Surf Hiriketiya brings more variety and more to figure out. Hiriketiya is a lush horseshoe cove with a famous, picture-perfect left point break peeling over a reef, with a playful beach break. It’s the ultimate training ground for surfers transitioning onto reef setups or learning to generate speed down the line.

For intermediate surfers, this is the kind of environment that accelerates everything. The breaks around camp, like Hiri Beach Break, Corners, Marshmallows, and the reef setups dotted along the nearby coast, ask you to read the wave, pick your line, and commit. Learn how to generate speed down the line, position yourself on a peeling wall, and surf with intention rather than just reaction. Our guides here lean into the details: footwork, timing, weight distribution and wave selection.

While beginners are guided in Hiriketiya’s gentle inside bay every day, our structured 5-Day Learn-to-Surf program takes place over in Weligama. But if you’re already riding green waves and ready to push things further? Hiriketiya delivers.

What If You’re  in Between?

Completely normal, most people fall somewhere in between. But don’t overthink it. On day one at either camp, our surf team will help you assess your level and match you to the right board.

Every morning, our local surf team assesses swell, wind, tides, and ocean safety to match your group to conditions that fit your ability on that specific day. No matter which camp you call home, you’ll be guided to the right wave for where you are in your surfing journey.

If you’re still deciding between the two camps for reasons beyond surf level, the vibe, the rooms, the social scene, our full Weligama vs Hiriketiya comparison covers every difference in detail. You can also find your perfect room across both locations before you decide.
