Surfing in Sri Lanka as a Digital Nomad
Work. Surf. Repeat.
Many digital nomads love Bali. And for good reason, it’s one of the best surf and digital nomad destinations in the world. But if you’re a digital nomad who surfs and you haven’t considered Sri Lanka yet, you’re missing out on something equally special, just a little different.
Sri Lanka has its own magic. It’s quieter, a little more raw, and it has that feeling of discovering something before the rest of the world fully catches on. You can surf year-round, the cost of living is low, the Sri Lankan people and food are incredible, and the digital nomad community here is growing fast. Some people come for two weeks, fall in love with it, and end up staying for two months. It happens more than you’d think.
If you’re weighing up where to base yourself for your next remote work chapter, here’s why Sri Lanka – and Kima Surf – belong on your list.
Why Sri Lanka Works Differently
Sri Lanka runs at its own pace, warm, easy, and completely addictive. The south coast has a relaxed energy that makes it easy to disconnect after work, be present, and actually enjoy where you are. No rush, no noise, just good waves and good people.
For European digital nomads, the time zone (UTC+5:30) is a dream. Your mornings are completely free, paddle out at sunrise, catch two hours of waves, have breakfast, and be at your laptop before your European colleagues have even had their first coffee. The locals are friendly and welcoming, the food is delicious, and the cost of living means you can live really well without worrying about your bank account.
And the surf? It never stops. Weligama and Hiriketiya offer waves all year round, both bays are sheltered enough to surf in almost any conditions, with the peak season running from November to April when the south coast is at its absolute best. Heading over in the summer? The east coast around Arugam Bay fires up with some of the longest right-hand point breaks in Asia. One island, two coasts, year-round surf. It’s a pretty convincing case for a longer stay.
Work From the Kima Surf Camps
One of the best things about basing yourself at one of our Kima Surf camps in Sri Lanka? You might not even need to leave camp to have a fully productive workday (except for surfing of course). Both our camps in Weligama and Hiriketiya are set up with fast and reliable internet, western amenities, air conditioning, and plenty of plugs around. Everything you need to work comfortably between those surf sessions and activities.
Kima Weligama
This area has some of the fastest and most reliable internet on the south coast. There are quiet corners around the camp that are perfect for focused work or video calls. Plus big communal tables where you can set up alongside other nomads from around the world to bounce ideas around and get inspired. The social, buzzing atmosphere at this camp makes it easy to stay motivated, and easy to close the laptop when the afternoon swell rolls in or when the other guests are playing a game of beachvolley.
Kima Hiriketiya
This camp takes the work-from-paradise thing up a notch. The luxury cabanas, private cabanas, spacious four-bed shared cabanas, and double-bed cabanas, all come with air conditioning and proper desks, so you can close the door, get into deep work mode, and forget the rest of the world exists. Surrounded by jungle, with the sound of the ocean in the background, it’s the kind of setup that makes Monday mornings enjoyable.
Both of our camps are also a few minutes away from local cafés if you ever fancy a change of scenery. Not sure which camp suits you best? Read our Weligama vs Hiriketiya comparison.
This Could Be Your Day at Kima Surf Sri Lanka
No matter if you head out to Weligama or Hiriketiya, here is what a perfectly balanced work-surf day might look like:
6:15 AM – Wake Up Early
Morning! Time to put your swimwear on, grab a banana and a coffee. No commute, no grey skies, no Monday morning dread. It’s time for the first surf session of the day
6:30 AM – Sunrise surf
Your Kima surf guide has already checked the conditions for the day, all you have to do is paddle out. Every morning is two hours of guided surfing with real coaching built in. Our surf guides know every break on the south coast and will take you to the right spot for your level. Whether you’re still learning how to surf or already working on more advanced techniques, you’ll leave the water energized and already thinking about the next surf session.
8:30 AM – Breakfast & socialize
Rinse the salt and sand off and sit down to a 3-course breakfast. This is where the best conversations happen. Surf stories, travel plans, and work ideas that somehow feel more exciting with a mango smoothie bowl in front of you.
9:00 AM – Let’s get to work
Find your corner at our camp with fast WiFi and plugs everywhere. It’s time for deep work, calls, and deadlines. And somehow, after a two-hour surf session, your brain is sharper than it ever was in any office.
1:00 PM – Lunch & Ice Bath
Try a new dish from our on-site restaurant or the traditional rice and curry from a local spot around the corner. Then take a plunge in the ice bath before heading back to the screen. It sounds intense. It feels incredible.
2:00 PM – Back to work
Fully recharged and focused. Knock out the rest of your to-do list and wrap up the day.
4:30 PM – Finish Line
Time to close your laptop. Join a yoga session at camp, go for a walk along the coast, or back in the water for an afternoon session. The rest of the day is yours.
07:00 PM – Dinner with the Kima Fam
Five nights a week, everyone sits down together, a BBQ night, Mexican night, pasta night, you name it. Always good, always social. Head out to a bar after or get an early night. Either way, tomorrow’s dawn patrol isn’t going to surf itself.
The Kima Advantage
Your stay includes 2 daily guided surf sessions with experienced coaches who know every break on the island, daily yoga, video analysis, ice baths and recovery facilities, surfskating, and a social programme. We’ll match you with the right surfboard from our 5-star quiver and take you to the right wave for your level every day.
And the people you meet at camp? Other nomads, creative freelancers, entrepreneurs, surfers from all over the world. Some of our guests come for a week and rebook for another month before they’ve even checked out. It’s that kind of place.
